Comedy night One Mic Stand celebrates six years of laughs

Since 2012, local comedians of all stripes have had the opportunity to test out their jokes at One Mic Stand (OMS), a weekly comedy open mic series held in Petaling Jaya.

Next week, for its sixth anniversary, OMS will be putting on Mega OMS 6, a five-day comedy binge, featuring five shows. Each show promises to unleash the zaniest comedians in town.

The upcoming OMS shows to be held at the General Space venue in Petaling Jaya, starting June 26, are spearheaded by Prakash Daniel and Brian Tan, two funnymen who have been in charge of OMS since 2015, taking over from founders Rizal van Geyzel and Kavin Jay.

“It was in September 2012 that I started doing comedy. I did a five minute set and then it was something I really enjoyed and continued doing for the last six years,” recalls Prakash, 36, in a recent interview.

He has seen the ups and downs of the comedy scene in recent times. For certain, it’s been a series of eventful late nights.

“One of the best memories was seeing a punter being asked to leave the room as the heckling got quite abusive to one of the comedians who was performing on stage,” he says, looking back at a rowdy night.

Prakash has also been in some star-studded comedy line-ups.

Comedians Tan (left) and Prakash both started out in the One Mic Stand show. Now they run the weekly series and will be co-headlining a show at Mega OMS 6.

“Performing before big names like Paul Ogata, Butch Bradley and Ronny Chieng is something I will always remember.”

As for Tan, he also has close links to the OMS bandwagon.

“I was always a fan of American Stand-Up Comedy, so when I realised that we had a local scene, I knew I had to be a part of it! My first OMS experience was episode 2 all the way back in May 2012. Hosting that night was Rizal, one of the founders of OMS, and he picked on me! It was a small crowd that night, so there was really slim pickings,” says Tan, 36.

Mega OMS 6 will see appearances from popular names such as Kavin Jay, Rizal van Geyzel, Jason Leong, Phoon Chi Ho, Keren Bala Devan, Sulaiman Azmil, Gajen Nad and more.

If anything, local comedy is still a marketable product.

The fact that veteran duo Comedy Court’s 20th anniversary show series at HGH Convention Centre in KL in April was a sold out affair must bode well for something as relatively “new” like OMS.

“You never take anything for granted. The comedy scene is very competitive here, so you have to bring your A-game to the table,” says Prakash.

The hilarity begins with the OMS Greatest Hits on June 26, a sort of throwback compilation featuring the “best bits” from the acts who have appeared in the show (now currently the longest weekly open mic show in the country) since it first started.

The OMS Junior show on June 27 features emerging comedians, which is something always laudable since the masses need new jokes.

“OMS will continue to be the place to nurture and develop new talent,” says Tan.

Your MC Live!, a no-holds barred talk show, will be hosted by radio personality JJ on June 28, while Tamilzhan!, a Tamil/English comedy show, is a dual-language mash-up treat to catch on June 29. The festival comes to a close on June 30 with The Brian & Prakash Comedy Hour, a co-headliner show.

The Mega OMS 6 show series will feature nearly 30 comedians – a testament on how to keep a small scene growing.

“This (OMS) platform will always be home for comedians. It has been the only room where comics try their new routines and make it big in their own way. OMS has been there from day one for many of us,” concludes Prakash.

Mega OMS 6 will be held at General Space, Lorong Universiti B, Seksyen 16, Petaling Jaya in Selangor from June 26-30. Tickets are RM25 (regular) and RM15 (for students). Shows contain adult content. Tickets can be reserved via email at onemicstand.malaysia@gmail.com. FB: One Mic Stand.
